Martha’s Vineyard Towns


Martha’s Vineyard is a great island to visit, especially in the summer months. It has beautiful beaches, nature preserves, historic villages, entertainment and lots of charm. Tisbury. This is the main port of entry to the island is also known as Vineyard Haven. One of the natural wonders of this town is its harbor which is protected by two promontories of land called East and West Chop. The harbor has the island’s only gasoline and heating oil depot and the famous Gannon and Benjamin boatyard which builds the finest classic wooden yachts. There’s a history lesson in every part of this town, with a lighthouse, impressive private homes, a private bookstore and a delicious bakery. Tisbury is home to Owen Park and Legion Field, Lake Tashmoo, The Capawock Theatre, the West Chop lighthouse landmark and more.



Oak Bluffs: Back in the 1830s, Methodists across New England would come here to spend a week in revival meetings. Many enjoyed the area and started staying for longer. Eventually, they expanded their summer visits and built wooden platforms for their tents and built a community of colorful cottages. Thus was born the island and today about 300 cottages still stand at the heart of Oak Bluffs. Today, the island has the liveliest after-hours entertainment with a downtown district called Circuit Avenue. It’s home to the famous Flying Horses carousel , Ocean Park, Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, State and Inkwell Beach.



Edgartown: In the 1800s, this town was the world center for the whaling trade, and along the hearbor today, you can see some impressive mansions built by the whaling captains and ship owners. The downtown district has a modern movie theater and many shops selling everything from gourmet food to designer clothes and jewelry too. Edgartown includes Chappaquiddick island and Katama which adds to the list of points of interest and includes Mytoi (Japanese garden) and the large coastal nature preserves.



West Tisbury: This town is best known for its rural and agricultural heritage and is home to Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society which puts on an annual fair and livestock show. In the downtown center, you’ll find a church as well as the famous Alley’s General Store which sells pretty much everything you can think of. Across the street sits the Field Gallery with its dancing sculptures on its lawn. West Tisbury is also home to the music venue Outerland, Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary and Lambert’s cove beach.



Chilmark: Back in the day, this town use to be devoted to sheep farming and you can still see a working sheep farm here. This place has two important town centers, one called Beetlebung Corner with a library, a school and the town hall. And Menemsha which is a picturesque fishing village with a beautiful beach. Chilmark is also home to Tiasquam river, Menemsha hills reservation and Lucy Vincent beach.



Aquinnah: Fewer than 400 people live here year-round. Aquinnah is popular for its impressive cliffs (Gay Head Cliff) which were created by the same glacier that formed the Vineyard 20,000 years ago. The island’s tribe, the Wampanoags, is the only recognized tribe in Massachusetts. There’s a museum detailing their entire history on Black Brook Road.
